What a beautiful day Memorial Day was. I agree with President Ronald Reagan, who said," After such a day, if the pilgrims had landed in California instead of Plymouth Rock, we would still be discovering the East Coast."
I made a rare appearance at the gathering at the pier on Memorial Day. I was so glad to say hello to many old friends as well as new ones. And thank you to the many that thanked me for my time in service. I can't in good conscience say "It was my pleasure." A woman told me of buying 25 American flags to pass out to Memorial Day participants, then finding out all the flags were made in China and returning them immediately. I guess they were bought from Walmart.
Maybe we professional football fans have been fortunate that no pro football team has decided to move into the Los Angeles area since the Rams and the Raiders left. I received a phone call from my brother in New Jersey who has been a season ticket holder with the New York Giants for over 25 years. His total cost to attend a Giants home game this coming season will be: $10,000 to reserve each seat, $150 for a seat and $20 for parking. I told him to sit in the parking lot and listen to the radio.
I admit I'm an independent, a little left of center, but something has me wondering. How can anyone – republican, democrat or independent, senior or ready to become a senior, or anyone with any political bend – vote for anyone running for any position who voted for the "Ryan Budget," which advocated drastic cuts to Social Security and Medicare. And could anyone vote for the conservatives who proposed to lend federal tax dollars to Joplin, Mo. after their devastating tornado onslaughts only if the people of Joplin agreed to pay it back? And are Social Security and Medicare to be considered "entitlements" after we all paid into those funds ever since we started working for a living? I think not!
